    Advanced Apprenticeship

Welcome to your classroom. And an epic career journey.

Expert training. Thousands of pounds in your pocket. And a lifetime of engineering possibilities. When you’re transforming Britain’s vast railway network, you get more than just an education. Over three fascinating, surprising, career-advancing years as an apprentice, you’ll gain the kind of skills that can set you up for life.

    Five engineering disciplines

We offer engineering apprenticeships in five trade areas: track, signalling, electrification and plant, telecoms, and overhead line.

Whichever trade you choose, you'll be working to transform our vast rail network, which includes 20,000 miles of track, 32,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts, 17 major stations, 8,200 commercial properties, and another 2,500 stations leased to train operators.

    Earn while you learn

With our Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme you earn as you learn. In the first year you'll be paid £8,618 plus £1,150 when you successfully finish the year. This rises to £12,055 in the second year and £14,364 in the third. In the first year we also pay for your accommodation, make sure you have three meals a day and also supply your work clothing and safety equipment.

On top of all this, you get 28 days' holiday, plus bank holidays. In your first year, your leave is planned for you and we pay for you to travel home for planned long weekends, Christmas and Easter holidays. And during the scheme, you can claim all our company benefits too, such as discounted train travel to and from work - and a pension.

    How to apply

To be eligible, you'll need four GCSEs (or Scottish and overseas equivalents) at grades A* - C which must include English, maths and a science subject. We will accept some NVQ / BTEC qualifications in lieu of the science element, depending on the subject studied.

You can register your details so that we can keep in touch to let you know when applications are open in January.
